FI Program

Academic Program At Jeanne Sauvé, we offer an Early French Immersion program. Our Kindergarten students have a short oral-based French class each day. The rest of the day is in English. In Grades 1-4, students do all of their classes except for Religion and English in French. In Grade 5, students also begin to do their science program in English. French Immersion Program At Jeanne Sauvé:

Our Kindergarten Program

Two year optional program
Junior and Senior Kindergarten classes
Kindergarten is in English with an oral Core French class each day
Two full-day classes
Alternate days: Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Monday/Tuesday/Thursday

Our Immersion Program

Immersion entry point is Kindergarten or Grade 1 (September of Grade 1)
Religion and Family Life programs are in English for all grades
Science is taught in English beginning in Grade 5

School Environment (prayers, National Anthem, announcements and student activities) in French and supporting the French culture and language

Time Allocation of French Instruction

Grades 1 to 4 - approximately 75-80% French instruction
Grades 5 to 8 approximately 60-70% French instruction
Between Grades 9 to 12, students are to take 10 credits in French to receive a French Immersion certificate
French Immersion programs must provide a minimum of 3800 hours of instruction in French by the end of Grade 8
Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board students receive approximately 5100 hours of French instruction by the end of Grade 8

Parent Support and Involvement

It is a key part of our program that parents support their child's learning by reading every night in English. Much of our time during the day is spent in French so parents need to support their children's learning by providing many English reading opportunities for their children.

We also have a number of wonderful parent volunteers who work together with our teachers in the classroom, with school projects, and with school outings. We are always looking for more volunteers, especially for our primary reading program!
